Washburn Rural High Schools serves as the high school for all of Auburn-Washburn's six attendance areas, and continues to uphold its long-standing tradition of excellence. It provides a progressive environment of world-class academics, athletics, and activities to foster all students' desires to learn and achieve through open discussion and self-discovery. As educator in pursuit of student success, it continually enhances its skills and knowledge, so as to offer the most relevant, effective curriculum in order to realize this vision. It is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. The Kansas State High School Activities Association classifies WRHS as a 6A school indicating one of the thirty-two largest high schools in Kansas.
It is one of eight schools in Kansas and the only school in Topeka to have an IB Diploma Program. Authorized in 2012, the first class of seniors graduated in the spring of 2014. Since its inception, the program has grown to currently include nearly 60 students and 17 staff members. WRHS IB provides students the opportunity to participate in small class sizes, be exposed to rigorous and internally focused curriculum, conduct their own research, be active in the community and the world through service projects, and to become critical and creative thinkers in a global society.
